Vitiligo & Pigmentary Disorders

Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterised by the loss of pigment, resulting in white patches on various parts of the body. This occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for pigmentation, are destroyed. The exact cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, autoimmune and environmental factors. Vitiligo can affect individuals of any age, gender or ethnic background, and can have a significant impact on their psychological and emotional wellbeing.

Autoimmune Nature

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes, the cells producing skin pigment. It affects about 1% of the global population, regardless of race or gender. It can develop at any age but often appears before the age of 30.

Types of Vitiligo

There are two main types of vitiligo: segmental and non-segmental. Segmental tends to affect only one side or part of the body and usually progresses for a few years and then stops. Non-segmental, the more common type, typically appears on both sides of the body.
